ABOUT

The Yasuaki Kakehi Laboratory (xlab) at the University of Tokyo, led by Professor Yasuaki Kakehi from the Interfaculty Initiative in Information Studies, will host the xlab Showcase 2025 "We Matter" to present this year's research outcomes, prototypes and artworks. The event will take place from February 8 (Sat) to February 10 (Mon) 2025, in Room 13BC (1st floor), Faculty of Engineering Building No. 2, at the University of Tokyo’s Hongo Campus. The showcase will feature a three-day exhibition, and on February 9 (Sun), a one-day-only poster presentation and panel talk session with guest speakers.
The theme, "We Matter", explores the concept of humanity as an integral part of the systems interwoven by matter, seeking to situate us within a cohesive cycle. In an era transitioning from an "Ego(centric)" worldview—where humans dominate and exploit nature—to an "Eco(centric)" perspective—which emphasizes coexistence and co-creation with nature—xlab intends to foster a balanced relationship with matter through technology. We aim to propose a unique Material Experience that illuminates the materiality of ourselves. This theme also serves as a response to the question posed by the theme of xlab Showcase 2020 "What's the Matter?".
With members across disciplines presenting on Material Experience Design which transcends the boundaries of engineering, art, design, humanities and social sciences, this event aspires to extend the reach of xlab’s activities, provoke vibrant discussions, and inspire a multitude of new ideas.
