Ambient Weaving

This textile functions as a speaker by weaving in piezoelectric polymer films with electrodes on both sides as foils. The audio-electrical signals exclusively make the weft portions vibrate, causing selective regions to generate sound. Sound dispersion can also be modified based on the textile's form. Moreover, as the textile can let external sounds pass through, it can facilitate unconventional sound effects such as superimposing sound from the textile onto environmental sounds. Since 2020, Yasuaki Kakehi Laboratory at the University of Tokyo has been collaborating with HOSOO Co., Ltd. and ZOZO NEXT, Inc. to develop innovative textiles that integrate traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology and achieve both functionality and beauty. Ambient Weaving is a concept that emerged from this collaborative research project, referring to textiles that express environmental information and textiles that incorporate the environment itself into its woven structure. Exhibitions featuring prototypes created under this concept have been showcased at venues both in Japan and internationally, including HOSOO GALLERY, the Ars Electronica Festival, and LVMH Métiers d'Art La Main.
