Drifting Colors
環境に呼応する機能性糸を西陣織として織り込むAmbient Weavingプロジェクト。本作Drifting Colorsは、本プロジェクトから生まれた織物の一つである。植物が水を吸い上げる仕組みから着想を得て、水分が蒸発しないように糸の表面にコーティングを施し、西陣織に織り込んだ。糸の端部を色水に浸けると、毛細管現象でゆっくりと色水が糸を伝わり、時間をかけて染まっていく。織物の色彩は、環境の湿度や重力の影響を受けながら変容していく。
In the Ambient Weaving project, functional thread that responds to the environment is woven into Nishijin textiles. Drifting Colors is one of the textiles that was created from this project. Getting inspiration from the plants’ mechanism of absorbing water, we coated the surface of each thread to prevent it from drying and wove the thread into the Nishijin textile. Due to capillary action the colored water passes through the thread and gradually dies over time. The color of the textile transforms with the influence of the environment’s humidity and gravity.
