PaperPrinting

A Machine for Prototyping Paper and Its Applications for Graphic Design

Wataru Date and Yasuaki Kakehi

In this research, we propose a novel digital fabrication system that makes a paper through an additive manufacturing process, especially for graphic designers. By using our system, designers can design various properties (e.g. thickness, color, transparency) of papers and output them in situ, which is hard in an existing paper production process.

In the current implementation, we use existing papers as the material and add CMC (Carboxymethyl Cellulose) and water to make the solution for printing. We designed the machine, which consists of a dispenser and an XY plotter, and created several output examples using the machine.

In ACM SIGGRAPH2018 (2018 August in Vancouver), we held a workshop for participants to design their own paper using our machines.
